A Commemorative History of the Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (ACIIA)
Our History
ACIIA was born at a time when Asia’s economic growth and governance challenges were accelerating, and the internal auditing profession recognized the need for a unified regional voice. On 27 February 2006, this vision took formal shape when ACIIA was constituted and registered in Malaysia under the Societies Act 1966. With its Constitution approved shortly thereafter, ACIIA was established as a federation of Asian Institutes of Internal Auditors affiliated with The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA Global), anchored by a clear and enduring purpose: to be the regional voice of the internal auditing profession.
From its earliest days, with its secretariat based in Kuala Lumpur, ACIIA brought together member institutes from across Asia to exchange ideas, address emerging risks, and collectively advance professional standards. Through regional business meetings, annual general meetings, conferences, and leadership forums, ACIIA became a trusted platform for dialogue and cooperation—bridging cultures, jurisdictions, and perspectives in service of stronger governance, accountability, and risk management.
As the Confederation matured, so too did its responsibilities. Recognizing the importance of operational continuity and professional administration, ACIIA took a decisive step in 2020 by formalizing its secretariat support through an Administrative Services Agreement with The Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia. This partnership strengthened ACIIA’s capacity to deliver its mission while maintaining stability during a period of growing regional engagement.
With the passage of time, ACIIA’s vision expanded beyond its original federation structure. To support long‑term sustainability, enhance fiduciary governance, and respond to the increasing complexity of its regional role, ACIIA embarked on a new chapter, one that would secure its future while honoring its origins.
That chapter unfolded with the incorporation of ACIIA as a non‑stock, non‑profit corporation in the Republic of the Philippines. Through this deliberate and forward‑looking decision, ACIIA preserved its founding mission while embracing a modern corporate framework aligned with international governance standards. Its Articles of Incorporation, executed by leaders from across Asia, affirmed ACIIA’s perpetual commitment to service, professionalism, and regional unity.
On 15 November 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines formally granted ACIIA juridical personality, marking a historic milestone in the Confederation’s journey. With incorporation came the adoption of Philippine‑compliant By‑Laws that further strengthened ACIIA’s governance—clarifying fiduciary responsibilities, institutionalizing transparency and accountability, and enabling inclusive decision‑making through both physical and virtual forums.
In 2024, this transition was completed with the transfer of secretariat and administrative support to the Institute of Internal Auditors Philippines (IIAP), coupled with the establishment of ACIIA’s headquarters in Makati City. Through close partnership and shared stewardship, IIAP now supports ACIIA’s regional operations, reinforcing the Philippines as the Confederation’s administrative and corporate home while continuing the legacy of collaboration established in Malaysia.
From its foundational years in Malaysia to its corporate consolidation in the Philippines, ACIIA’s journey reflects the strength of collective leadership and the adaptability of a profession committed to relevance and impact. Each milestone—registration, growth, incorporation, and operational renewal—has been guided by a shared belief in the value of internal auditing as a pillar of good governance.
Today, ACIIA stands not only as an institution, but as a testament to regional unity, professional excellence, and shared purpose. As it looks to the future, ACIIA remains steadfast in its mission to serve Asia’s internal auditors, uphold the public trust, and continue shaping the profession for generations to come.
